This is a superb book on the role of women in yoga, historically and in modern times. Very well written and clear. The stories of the yoginis and their pioneering lives are very inspiring. A must read for both men and women interested in yoga!

Although yoga is rapidly becoming dominated by female practitioners, so many yoga books are focused on the male influence in yoga (Iyengar, Krishnamacharya, Jois, Desikachar, Bikram, etc.). For the first time, “Yogini: The Power of Women in Yoga” introduces us to many of the women who have made (and continue to make) inroads on the yogic path. Compiled by Janice Gates with a foreward by Linda Sparrowe, this beautiful book brings us the stories and insights from 17 of the most renowned and beloved yoginis. From pioneers like Indra Devi to the newer gurus like Sharon Gannon, “Yogini” gives us a taste of what these women are all about – and how they embody the ‘yogic lifestyle’. Full of wisdom, insight and her-story, this book will inspire. You will find yourself asking how you can remain true to yourself as these brave women have. I highly recommend this to all practitioners – regardless of your gender.

I cannot say enough about this book. With so many disappointing yoga books out there, this one has really surpassed my expectations. I love the history about women in yoga, and I adore all of the personal commentary from female yoga teachers. Because this book doesn’t subscribe to a style, it is refreshing, informational, and inspiring. This book has inspired me to address more of women’s issues in my own teaching, and to really open up the idea that truth and value is found inside, while so many women are still seeking validation from outside sources. If you’re expecting a book about poses: this is not it. This book addresses the emotional and spiritual needs of todays modern yogini. A true, true gem for women looking to honor themselves and grow their personal practice on a spiritual and emotional level.

Not only does this book tell a fascinating history of women in Yoga, each profile offers insightful wisdom from women who have chosen the road less travelled and lived to tell their tale. I was especially inspired by the Luminaries section which profiles the early pioneering women in yoga. A must read for all yoginis!
