Hatha Yoga – An Ancient Program of Balance, Harmony and Purification
Hatha Yoga originated in the 15th century in India as part of a program of purification of the body incorporated along with meditation. Hatha is the Hindu word for “sun and , while “Yoga” is the word for “yoke” or uniting of body, mind and environment. Hatha Yoga places great significance on achieving balance between physical, mental, spiritual and emotional states in harmony with earth, water, sun and moon.

Basic Tenets of Hatha Yoga Program
The basic tenets of the Hatha Yoga Program is comprised of several aspects:
Asana which focuses on posture similar to the postures of T’ai Chi and Chi Gong
Prayanamas where subtle energy control is the focus, a very important aspect of Hatha Yoga
Chakras which are the centers of energy
Kundalini which encompasses muscle force
Kryas which promotes the mastering of kundalini techniques
Shakti, the sacred force
Nadis which are channels
Mudras, which are symbolic gestures similar to those in T’ai Chi.

Shatkarma, purification, begins with freeing up the mind by freeing up the body through holistic lifestyle, yoga practice daily and metaphysical re-adaptation.

Self-Improvement Through Hatha Yoga
Within asanas, also known as “sun signs”, movements are performed and practiced that rely on focused mental concentration in order to achieve maximum benefits. Practitioners of Hatha Yoga find a new sense of physical balance and strength as a result of consistent use of asanas. Thus, Hatha Yoga retards the aging process by infusing mind and body with continual renewal of strength and balance. Most people who practice Hatha Yoga find that it’s necessary to also take inventory of their dietary and lifestyle predilections. This is a very natural emanation of alterations to a less healthy lifestyle.

Benefits of Hatha Yoga
The benefits of Hatha Yoga are a sense of wholeness and overall good health. Through the balance of mind and body effected by Hatha Yoga, a new harmony evolves from within and allows the individual to experience less stress and tension as a result. Yet, the adaptability to Hatha Yoga lifestyle is relatively easy because of the simplicity of its core fundamentals.

Meditation and Hatha Yoga
Meditation is an element of nearly all religions, holistic programs and cultural lifestyles. Meditation is also one of the oldest forms of self-recognition. Discovering the wealth of knowledge, ideas and inspirations within the unconscious mind is often obliterated by details stored in the conscious mind. This creates a conflict in the body when conscious messages block out unconscious messages intended as metaphysical protection from conscious deliberate negative actions. Quieting the mind sufficiently in meditation also requires the body to be receptively postured for best results. This is the basis of Hatha Yoga.

Lessons of Hatha Yoga for All Ages
Teaching children from young ages to adapt to the holistic program of Hatha Yoga creates a permanent direction for mental stability and good physical health. It is also the very best time for the practice of Hatha Yoga to begin. Those who choose Hatha Yoga in their senior years may find several of the asanas, i.e., the candle, the Lotus Position, physically challenging. For this age group, modified asanas are taught.

How To Create A Yoga Studio In Your Own Home

]]>

If you participate in Yoga you likely have a local studio you attend, but that might not always be convenient. Whether it’s because of the weather or a busy schedule (or cost–Yoga instruction can be expensive), sometimes it would be so much better if you could do your Yoga workout at home. Some instructors are even encouraging Yoga at home, to improve the powers of meditation and concentration, and to help with your flexibility. Well, creating a yoga studio in your own home isn’t at all that difficult or expensive, and just think of how much more relaxing it could be to practice your Yoga at home in a “private” studio.

While there are no hard and fast rules as to what a home Yoga studio must have, these suggestions can help you create a private sanctuary that has everything you need:

•    Choose a warm space that has natural lighting.  You can hang airy window coverings that can be used for privacy and to cut heat if necessary, without compromising the actual light.

•    Keep the space airy and uncluttered. Keep it minimalistic with little on the walls. A couple of nice candles hanging on the walls is perfect. No more though!

•    Consider adding natural scents to help provide a sense of tranquility. Lavender oil is a great choice.

•    A tile, laminate, or hardwood floor is best to provide a firm base.

•    You want a temperature between 75 and 85 degrees. You can achieve this using a small space heater or even a fireplace. Heat is necessary to help your muscles relax, and relaxed muscles mean you’ll be more flexible. It’s hard to do Yoga if you’re in the basement shivering!

•    A laptop will allow a way to play your tranquil music and keep your routines handy. If you don’t have a laptop you’ll need stereo and a paper print out of your routines. Music is very important to Yoga so make sure you have a good quality sound system. You can also get CDs of DVDs to play, which will guide you through a Yoga session.  Rodney Yee is a popular Yoga instructor with many offerings.

•    A you mat is necessary.  Consider an eco-friendly one if possible.  It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but sometimes cheaper mats are made from polyvinyl chloride, which is environmentally toxic.

•    A small blanket can be nice to help you get into positions or to cover yourself with during the meditation stage. A strap and yoga blocks (or a thick book) may also be useful.

•    Tea and food can be an amazing addition to your Yoga studio. Many love to include chocolate and tea as part of their yoga ritual, something to be enjoyed after a good workout.

•    If you are religious, you can add elements that let you nurture yourself spiritually.  Consider making an altar and placing objects that meaningfully represent the deities that are important to you. Tailor it to your personal belief system.

If you are new to Yoga, you may want to take a beginner course first. Once you learn the proper techniques and correct body alignment, you’ll be far more confident that what you are doing is correct. There are also plenty of online resources available for free online, and your library should also have plenty of instructional material. You should also learn the philosophies of Yoga.

A home Yoga studio is a great investment, both for you and for your home. You can enjoy having your very own personal Yoga studio designed to by you for you. Consider this an investment in yourself and you can’t put a price on that!

Yoga is a powerful exercise, which some misconstrued beliefs handed down through the years led many to believe that yoga was a misgiving spiritual action. The fact is religion stands behind yoga, yet yoga is designed to teach us how to gain control over the mind and body. In addition, yoga teaches us discipline. Yogic methods (Yogic is the practice of yoga) teaches us to become aware, conscious, and gain control of our life.
In view of the fact, yoga is one of the most powerful exercises that have characters to deliver us from the chaos of emotional response, such as denial, self-absorbance, doubt, fear, etc. If yogic methods will help us to achieve sound mind, how in the name of its power can it be wrong?
It can’t be, therefore we will learn some yogic methods to help you see for your self how yoga has helped millions of people worldwide. In fact, doctors are recommended yoga to patients around the world. Yoga is Hinduism, Buddhist, Indian, Tibetan practice, yet many Occidental nations are practicing yoga today. In addition, modern yogic methods are currently developed.
Yogic methods include Hatha, Jiiana, Raja, Lotus, Kundalini, Laya, Mantra, Yantra, etc, and all methods include healing strategies. The first Hatha helps one to master breathing, as well as gain power over his/her vitality and physical body.
During practice Yogini (Female exerciser) or Yogi (Male), proceed to work toward the next steps in yogic practice. The goal is to achieve the highest power possible, as well as come in connection with the spiritual side. Few yogic methods require prayer, which starts the steps toward healing.
The Practices of HathaHatha is the process of gaining discipline over the body. Like each branch of yogic strategy, Yogini and Yogi seek control. Hatha (haht-ha) aids to discipline the body, yet the method does not focus on emotions, or mind. Consequently, once Yogi or Yogini completes Hatha, they must move toward the next yogic method.
According to yogin philosophers, until one masters the body, thus purifying the body and prepare the body for mind control, thus one cannot achieve. Once Hatha is mastered, Yogi and Yogini can move to master meditation, concentration, ecstasy, etc.
Yoga has a mission and that is to teach everyone that the body is the Temple of God. The temple must be taken care of so that one can enjoy good health, longevity, and reach his/her heighten level of enlightenment.
At the point of Hatha, one must move to balance posture. The purpose is to achieve graceful power over vitality and the physical body.
The goal is to ground the body. Once the body is grounded, Yogini and Yogi will find firmness, and have a center that provides flexibility. Once Yogi and Yogini gain control over the body, thus they will know what they hope to gain in life, as well as know their identity. Yoga will move them to empowerment, which helps Yogini and Yogi to achieve their missions in life.
To start grounding the body one must learn to synchronize the leg and arm movement by sensing balance. Once Yogi and Yogini have a sense of balance they gain self-assurance.
Inner earsThe inner ear is the critical organ of hearing, as well as equilibrium. The inner ear is located at the temporal bone. The bone supplies nerves to the bodily organs, which stimulate organs, muscles, etc, and works alongside the auditory nerves. These nerves include the semicircular canals, cochlea, and the vestibule.
It is important that you understand the inner ear plays a vital part in balance. The prime reason that people feel discomfort in relationships, social gatherings, etc, is due to the imbalances. We all need balance, and that balance must be obtained in all areas of one’s life.

Notes on Spirit Rock: Visit to Monday evening Buddhism class with Jack Kornfield

Spirit Rock is not a New Age Center, per se. Located in San Francisco’s Bay Area (Marin County’s Woodacre), Spirit Rock is home to Buddhists. They are not Zen Buddhists, as they emphasized. They are Theravada, as is one of their founding members, the teacher and popular writer Jack Kornfield.

Many find Spirit Rock a refreshing and spiritual place to visit and take for a retreat. Marin County, and in specific Southern Marin, is not a place for Christian worship.

Handling Difficult Patients

We all have them, but no one wants them–difficult patients. I’m not talking about patients with complex medical conditions. I’m talking about patients who try your patience. Yoga: Not Just for Flexible People

Posted: Dec 05, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

As a Yoga teacher, I’ve met many people who say things like, “I’d like to try Yoga but I’m not very flexible.” Maybe they think Yoga is only for people who are very limber and can twist themselves into pretzel-like positions. Or they think you must be able to do the poses perfectly – whatever perfect is – to even try Yoga.

But nothing could be further from the truth.  Actually, being too flexible is not always a good thing.  Going right into a pose without focusing on the strength of the muscles often leads to injuries.

The wonderful thing about practicing Yoga is you can start where you are. If you are inflexible and stiff, if you have arthritis or weaknesses in the joints, or back problems, you can still do the same pose as the more flexible person. You just make simple adjustments and perhaps use Yoga props.

In my classes I use blocks, blankets, chairs and other props to assist students in the poses. The idea of using props to assist with poses was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar. This makes the poses accessible to everyone.

Using props is especially beneficial if you have limitations such as stiffness, sore back or are recovering from an injury. There is always a way to enjoy the posture and receive its benefits. You may use a prop such as putting your hand on a block in Trikonasana (Triangle pose) or using a blanket for child pose.

Eventually, with regular practice the props may no longer be needed. When you practice Yoga by starting where you are and going from there, your body will feel strong, fit and wonderful no matter what your fitness or flexibility level.

This is true Yoga when the body, mind and spirit come together. When the posture is comfortable and steady and your breath is smooth and effortless, you are practicing Yoga. Bring your attention to your breath and enjoy your body and the way it feels. It does not matter whether you are flexible or not.

When the Yoga practice is over, you will feel energized, refreshed, strong and relaxed. Yoga is for everyone regardless of fitness level or flexibility. The benefits of yoga are received in doing the right variation of each posture for you and not in achieving advanced stages.

Fitness Training

Posted: Jun 14, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

Fitness training is essential not only for those who want to keep fit, but also for those who want to stay healthy. You can take fitness classes at a fitness centre or go to a health club to achieve health and fitness with group fitness training lessons.

Attending fitness health clubs is better than training alone because it gives you better motivation. When you have to take yourself off for a walk you will be tempted to make any number of excuses not to go. You will be busy, or it will be too hot or cold – anything at all if you don’t enjoy exercising much.

But once you’ve paid you membership at a fitness club you are much more likely to go. For a start, you won’t want to waste that money you paid out, but in addition to that there will be personal fitness trainers available to make up a personal fitness plan for you. Your personal trainer will become your friend and you will look forward to seeing them each week. Additionally, you will be sure to make plenty of other friends who are also undertaking personal fitness training.

Personal training such as is offered by a fitness club will ensure that you do not injure yourself by training inappropriately for your present health and fitness levels. Your unique fitness regime will gradually lead you along the road to fitness and it won’t be long before that cholesterol and high blood pressure will have both gone down, not to mention your weight.

And as your body gets fitter you will find that you can once again enjoy the many activities that you loved to do when you were younger and fitter. You may decide to go dancing, take long walks along the beach or take up a sport because you feel so fit and energetic. Life can only get better when your fitness levels improve.

Group fitness classes: not just for leotards

I heard some shocking gossip in the changing rooms yesterday. No, it wasn’t that Amy Winehouse is back in rehab. I overheard two ladies chatting about how they would never do aerobics again because in the 80s the routines were too complex and intense. This is a common misconception about aerobics and group fitness classes. But times have changed since then: complex routines, skin-tight Lyrca, leg warmers and concentrating on not tripping over your feet are a thing of the past.
